Beagles Being Used in Lab Testing – Trystyn Merrill

Trigger Warning: This article contains sensitive topics regarding laboratory testing on animals and animal cruelty.

What are companies hiding from you?

When most people think of animal testing they jump to conclusions. I used to believe animal testing is where the makeup product is applied to the test subject.

But it’s actually a lot more gruesome than you may think. Here’s the thing: you are not informed because companies are hiding it from you. Unfortunately laboratories are using beagles to test drugs, pesticides, cosmetics, and so much more.

Why only beagles?

Beagles are incredibly docile and don’t hold grudges. Beagles don’t fight back, because they were bred as pack hunting dogs. “They let us do anything we want to them, that’s why we like beagles” (https://bfp.org/). said a laboratory worker.

Why is this still the system?

Many find the system outdated mainly because evidence shows 90% of drugs tested on animals fail to pass in human trials. However this system still exists in the U.S because there is a strict mandate that states drug tests must pass an animal test before being conducted on humans. Unfortunately the beagles are the cheapest option for companies to get their products on the shelf.

Life Of a Laboratory Beagle

Beagles used for testing are bred full scale commercially. A beagle puppy in a laboratory’s hands will never see the soil, grass, or the sun, but is guaranteed a short life confined in a crate. Instead of a name each dog receives a federal ID number in their ear so they can be tracked. This helps dissociate the laboratory workers from getting attached to the animals. These dogs constantly are handled for force feeding, injections, and blood draws. Typically by the end of an experiment the dog will be killed.

Here is a video regarding the subject:

Unregulated

In several undercover operations conducted by the humane world for animals it was found that most regulations in the Animal Welfare act were being broken or bypassed. Legally beagles are supposed to be given pain relief from the experiment. However scientists began to argue euthanasia and anesthesia interferes with the results of the experiments. In other cases the labs are understaffed. Understaffing can lead to cages that have not been cleaned for days. Routine inspectors of these facilities acknowledged and ignored the unsanitary and illegal conditions.

Survivors

Fortunately some dogs do get rescued and are able to survive. The transfer isn’t easy though. It is known that rescued beagles don’t know how to walk, run, or socialize when first outside of their cage. They may have developed severe food guarding issues due to trauma.  Along with splinters on the pads of their paws from balancing on wire cages.

How can you help?

The bottom line is no living organism should have to live like this. The system is outdated, dogs and humans are genetically different. This is reality and not something that should be ignored. End the suffering, freedom for the beagles.
